Is Safari 5 for you? Find out.

by Faizan 2. July 2010 23:59

Apple thinks Safari 5 is the best way to read online, greater support for HTML5, and other new features that make the web even better, I could agree with them after I cruised through my favorite websites on the new Safari 5 Read on.

Apple has packed quite a number of new features and improvised old ones from its predecessor Safari 4. This makes Safari 5 a browser that will give tough competition for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

Apple released Safari 5 on June 7, 2010 & it’s available for both MAC & Windows Operating system. There is a trimmed down version of the browser which comes preinstalled for the iPhone & iPad and that is Apple’s strategy to be far more reaching across various platforms.

First thing you will notice about Safari 5 is the simple user interface that it carries throughout. There are no cluttered icons or tabs, when you open a website you will be focusing on the contents of the webpage rather than getting distracted with useless functions which a normal user would rarely use on the browser, it’s simplicity that Apple has aimed for and have gotten it.

Apart from the user interface is Apple’s engineering brilliance pushed to limits on making Safari one of the fastest browsers on the planet. Apple claims that Safari5 is faster than Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox, while this might be an exaggeration with no unnecessary plugins & add-ons installed, the pages load surprisingly fast & we found the browser to be satisfactory overall in our tests.

Apple has made some much required changes under the hood of the browser. The browser now supports dozens of new web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, & JavaScript, Also new to the browser are full screen play back and closed captions for HTML5 Video, HTML5 Geo-location, HTML5 forms validation, & several other features.

When you visit a website & see a lot of text content it’s easy to get distracted with all those pictures, ads, menus, user comments, and other rich multimedia. This adds to a lot of clutter which the user usually ignores and oftentimes distracting. Apple introduces a new feature called “Safari Reader” which basically pops up a clean user interface with only the main content eliminating all the clutter for us to enjoy reading, this feature is yet to be seen in any browser till date. For those of us who love reading articles & blogs online this is a change that we have been waiting for. To open the reader simply click on the reader icon within the address bar, you will have access to some handy functions like zoom in zoom out, Mail page & print.

An important feature in any browser is the ability to search without opening the webpage, this feature has been a standard feature in Safari. Now, new to Safari5 is the ability to choose your search engine from the likes of Google, Yahoo & Bing from the search bar. The default search remains to be Google which should satisfy most of the customers. This has been a long awaited change that safari users want as other browsers provide this function from a long time.

Safari5 also introduces a new feature called “Smart Address Bar”, now we do need to type the full web address in order to visit a page, for example if u want to visit www.apple.com, simply type apple & hit enter. Also as you visit more web pages the smart address bar gets smarter suggesting you the page that you want to visit based on the history of your browsing. It’s definitely a time saver.

Apple has done a great job with the Safari5; this update might save the browser market share for Apple. We think Apple is already overdue on these new features as most of other browsers have already implemented them with the exception of the Safari Reader. The Safari Reader might just be the feature that will make people switch to the new browser. What do u think? Did Apple do a great job with Safari5 or is it just on par with the other browsers out there with this update? Leave us a comment here.

image

Rumored to be called iPhone 4G / HD before the official launch, Apple finally broke open the silence when the world watched in anticipation to get a glimpse of the actual device, on June 7th Steve Jobs finally revealed that the new device from Apple would be called iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 hosts a lot of new features & differences when compared with its predecessors iPhone, iPhone 3G iPhone 3GS.iPhone is available in 2 colors; Black and White

Let’s take a look at few of the most considerable features of the new device from Apple.

image

The first thing you’ll notice about the iPhone 4 is its sleek design sporting an all-new look. It’s got glass on the front & rear & stainless steel around the sides, the iPhone 4 is also slimmer when compared to the previous models, to be specific its just 9.3mm thick & 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS. Apple claims that the iPhone 4 is the thinnest Smartphone on the planet.

After holding the iPhone 4 on your hand the first thing you would want to do is turn the device ON & what you are greeted with is the gorgeous display. Apple presents Retina Display new to the iPhone 4, the retina display holds 4 times the pixels of the previous generation models, which make the screen resolution at a whopping 960 x 640 on a 3.5inch screen. Again the best we’ve seen for any Smartphone out there, no other Smartphone comes even close.

Apple announced iPad in January this year & it was powered by a remarkable processor called the A4 chip. The A4 chip was designed & manufactured by Apple, it’s extremely energy efficient. The most logical step for Apple to do was to take the A4 chip & implement it on the iPhone 4; Apple has done just that. The A4 chip along with a large battery promises to increase the talk time of the device by up to 40% with 10 hours of video & 40 hours of music. That is really impressive.

Introducing the Gyroscope for the iPhone 4, Apple has tied the Gyroscope with Accelerometer & the compass to provide you with 6 axis motion sensing. What this means is that you will be able to enjoy gaming to the same level as the Wii or the 6 axis motion controller of the PlayStation 3.

Also the iPhone 4 now records videos in HD (720P at 30fps); it also has a built-in 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. Apple took its time in implementing these features and it’s a change that is worth the efforts and time and we are happy about it.

iPhone 4 comes preloaded with the latest version of its OS called iOS4, you can read all about the incredible OS here.

Last but not least we are pleased to introduce FaceTime video calling, iPhone 4 now supports video calling between iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 devices, all though this is a great feature to have, it’s only Wi-Fi enabled meaning you can’t make calls over your 3G network. Apple needs to fix this in the near future so that this becomes the next big thing after voice calling.

We are excited about the iPhone 4. What do you think? Will you buy one or are you happy with your existing phone, please leave us a comment below…

Top-10-reasons-why-you-should-upgrade-to-iOS-4

by rajkumar 21. June 2010 08:02

iOS4 from Apple for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G is available for users worldwide from today. Multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, that doesn’t kill the excitement, even a bit though.

iOS 4 boasts of features that are highly fascinating and thrilling. Apple like any other release comes up with over a 100 new features. We can’t wait to put this new engine under the hood of our favorite devices to get them supercharged.

1. Multitasking: Needless to mention this is one thing we have been missing since the day we got our hands on these devices. Tweeting or updating Facebook while listening to music wouldn’t hurt with the advent of multitasking with the iOS4. Compromise on battery life on iPhone 3G and 3GS is negligible.

2. Smart folders: I’ve always wanted to unclutter by home screen. I’m extremely delighted to find Smart Folders with the new iOS4. I think they call it smart because it can look up the app category and create a folder with the category name. All done with a press on the screen and a drag.

3. Multiple Exchange Accounts: With the new iOS4, apple has sharpened its strategic move on the capability to add multiple Microsoft Exchange server accounts. Syncing notes with Gmail and Mobile me are equally pleasing to end-users. With the Exchange server 2010 getting more popular Apple has familiarized its iOS 4 with Exchange server 2010.

4. 5x optical camera zoom: iOS4 lets you zoom 5x whatever your camera is pointing at with no addition app that comes from app store as it previously used to be. The zooming capability now comes right from the firmware. This will be a great advantage as the previous app store apps come with a price tag if you were to zoom.

5. Wi-Fi Stable in Sleep Mode: I’ve always wanted my iPhone to be able to await a VOIP call while the phone is in sleep mode. This is now possible with iOS running in my phone. Thanks to Apple’s engineering brilliance.

6. Stream YouTube Videos In safari: YouTube and Apple still have their hands joined on streaming videos. What has changed this time with the iOS is the ability to stream YouTube videos to our phone in Safari. None of us would mind if we ever happen to delete that YouTube app by mistake.

clip_image006

7. Supports Bluetooth Keyboard Tethering: Typing using a full-fledged keyboard beats the touch screen any day. iOS4 now supports pairing your Bluetooth keyboard with the handheld device. Now write that email using your Bluetooth keyboard.

8. Enhanced Email Attachments: Who wouldn’t like a preview of email attachments even before you open it? With Exchange server capabilities added to the device this is one great necessity, glad to know that it’s now possible.

9. iOS4 SSL VPN : Apple is now delving to woo enterprise customers by introducing SSL VPN. This will go hand in hand with other enterprise feature built into these devices. This is a brand new feature with iOS4

10. Video Autofocus: In addition to HD video recording is autofocus which will allow your IPhone 3G and 3GS generate more vivid results. IPhone 4 comes with 720p HD video recording capability.
